Kerala Flood Response 2021

Kerala was battered by a series of landslides and heavy floods as a result of torrential downpour. The central districts of Kottayam and Idukki were the worst hit.
A team of 7 members including a team coordinator, a doctor, 2 vaccinators, 2 Nursing Assistants, and a Data Entry Operator from the DOCTORS FOR YOU Kottayam Mobile Unit were deployed to the landslide strikken area at Kootikkal, Munadakayam in Kottayam district to strengthen the rescue efforts.
The team reported to PP unit, General Hospital at around 9.00 PM on 16/10/2021.After collecting the necessary emergency kits and rapid antigen testing kits from the hospital, the team proceeded to St. George School at Kootikkal along with an ambulance from GH. We reached the relief camp at St. George School, Kootikkal by 12.30 AM and reported to Kanjirappally M.O Dr. Rekha Salini. We joined with the rescue team working for evacuation process headed by NDRF Cap. Manoj Kumar and deputy Thahasildar. We also provided first aid treatment and medications for minor ailments to few localites evacuated from the landslide area. The recuse efforts waned by 1 AM due to poor visibility and incessant rains

Around 7 AM on 17/10/2021, a brief meeting was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of rescue operations at various sites of (Plappalli, Kavali and Mundayar areas) and to formulate further action plans. After the meeting our team was directed to Kootikkal CHC to provide medical care to the localites from the landslide area.

Another team from DOCTORS FOR YOU consisting of a doctor, 2 vaccinators, 2 Nursing Assistants, and a Data Entry Operator joined with us around 8.00 Am on 17/10/2021.They continued the medical services at Kootikkal CHC, while the first team headed to the accident area to provide medical support and guidelines to the rescue team, civil defense team and the public. The bodies of 10 missing persons were recovered by11.30 AM.

Around 12 PM details regarding the current scenario and rescue operations so far were explained to the Honorable ministers Shri K. Rajan (Minister of land revenue, survey and land records, land reforms , housing), Shri V.N. Vasavan (minister of co-operation and registration) , Shri. Anto Antony (Member of Parliament), Shri. V. D. Satheesan (Opposition Leader) and Shri. Vazhoor Jose (Member of Legislative Assembly).

Following the meeting the entire team was divided into 3 for the purpose of conducting rapid antigen tests in relief camps at St.Marys school, St. George School and KMJ public school. Out of 90 RAT conducted at St. George School one found positive, who was shift to covid ward at Kootikkal CHC. All among the 70 RAT conducted at St. Marys School and 60 RAT conducted KMJ Public school were tested negative.

The activities of the team at Kootikkal were coordinated by Kottayam RCH officer Dr. Sithara, District TB officer Dr. Twinkle, Medical officers Dr. James George and Dr. Rekha Salini.

The team departed from Kootikkal by 5.30 pm on 17/10/2021 and returned the remaining articles and reports to the General Hospital Kottayam by 7.30 PM.
